Harper McGarity
Harper McGarity is a Southern writer focused on forgotten stories and the foundations they were built upon.
Based in the Appalachian foothills, his work blends history, folklore, and fiction grounded in real locations, real people, and the stories they left behind for us to tell.
The Curious Georgia series explores regional myth and modern curiosity spanning cryptids and creatures, lost towns and urban legends, and the kinds of stories passed around a campfire or back porches on a balmy Georgia summer night.
His newest project turns toward historical fiction. Set on the frontier in the late 1800s, it’s a world where law is more performance than protection, whispers dance on the breezes tumbling from the foothills, and where justice tends to arrive years too late to matter.
Outside of writing, McGarity photographs old buildings, backroads, and forgotten places. Mostly because he’s a curious sort himself and is fascinated by the world striving to reclaim itself, and because someone ought to protect the stories we wrote before nature erases the footprints.
